If you are processing the news of your unplanned pregnancy and considering your options, it is important to understand the scope of your options. Regarding abortion, there are two types: medical and surgical. How far along you are in your pregnancy will determine which method you qualify for.
Prior to Scheduling An Abortion
Before making your abortion appointment, it will be necessary to confirm your pregnancy test results. At Birthright of Atlanta, our team offers this service to you at no cost. We will walk you through the process and be with you through each step!
Abortion Pill
The first type of abortion is known as the abortion pill or medication abortion. This pill consists of two drugs that will terminate a pregnancy. Mifepristone, the first drug, acts to block a hormone called progesterone in order to stop the pregnancy’s growth. Misoprostol, the second drug, causes the uterus to contract and expel the pregnancy.
The FDA has approved these two drugs up to 70 days after the first day of your last menstrual cycle.
Surgical Abortion
A surgical abortion, again, is dependent on the gestational age of your pregnancy. This type of abortion is performed in a clinic and will use the Vacuum, or Suction Aspiration, a method that uses suction to remove the pregnancy vaginally. Special instruments such as scraping tools and forceps may need to be used to remove parts of the pregnancy that were not successfully suctioned.
