unexpectedly pregnant woman

An unplanned pregnancy can throw a wrench in your plans. What are you going to do? How will this impact your life goals? Or, more importantly, how will your partner and family react to the news?

If you’re struggling to find the right way to share the news of your unplanned pregnancy, we’re here to help.

Here are a few things to consider before sharing your news.

Share The News In Person

If it’s possible, sharing the news of an unplanned pregnancy face-to-face is best. We’ve all been on the receiving end of miscommunication from a text or phone call. Seeing a person’s facial expression lends a lot to the conversation and can help your heavy news to be absorbed graciously.

Take Safety Precautions

In that same vein, your safety is the highest priority. If you’re not sure how your boyfriend or family will react to the pregnancy news, choosing a public space to have the conversation is a good idea. Bringing along a mutual friend to have for support is also a safer option.

If you have serious concerns about your partner, contact the National Domestic Violence Hotline. If the threat is immediate, dial 9-1-1.

Don’t Allow Anyone To Pressure You

One of the most important things to remember is that your heart/mind/body is the one that will be affected by the outcome. While you’ll want to consider the opinions of your loved ones regarding your pregnancy, do not let anyone pressure you to make a decision you’re uncomfortable with.

Share the available options with your boyfriend. Talk through how each scenario will impact both of your lives. If you and your boyfriend are not on the same page when it comes to the future, Birthright of Atlanta is here to help.

Making A Plan

When everyone has taken time to process the news, it’s time to make a plan for the future.

The first step is confirming your pregnancy. Birthright of Atlanta is here to help with that. Once you’ve confirmed your pregnancy, the next step is exploring your options.
